EIN: Employer Identification Number Definition

What is an EIN? Learn how to apply for an Employer Identification Number and why it is critical for US bank accounts and Stripe access.

Definition

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a 9-digit federal tax identification number assigned to businesses by the IRS.

Format: XX-XXXXXXX (same as SSN, but for business entities)

Why EIN is Critical for Non-US Founders

EIN is the gateway document for:

  1. US Business Bank Accounts: All US banks require EIN to open corporate accounts.
  2. Payment Processors: Stripe, PayPal, and Paddle require an EIN before activation.
  3. IRS Compliance: Foreign-owned LLCs must have an EIN for tax filings, such as Form 5472.
  4. B2B Contracts: US companies often require an EIN on W-9 forms.
